The forgetting curve, and what to do about it
In 1885, a psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus ran a now-famous series of experiments on himself, testing how quickly he forgot freshly learned material over time. What he found became known as the forgetting curve: without any review, we lose a large share of new information within hours or days of first encountering it. The useful part came next — revisiting that material at spaced-out intervals dramatically slowed the decline. This has come to be called the spacing effect, and it's been replicated across a wide range of learning contexts since.
A related line of research, associated with psychologists Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke, found something equally practical: actively trying to recall or use information cements it more firmly than simply re-reading or re-encountering it does — sometimes called the testing effect. Put together, these findings point to a simple, slightly counterintuitive conclusion: a small amount of active practice, spaced across many days, tends to beat one long session — even when the long session adds up to more total time.
Why this matters for learning to think differently
Noticing your own thinking patterns — and learning to question them in the moment — is itself a kind of skill, and skills follow the same rules as any other learned material. Reading about cognitive distortions once won't make you fluent at spotting "mind reading" or "catastrophizing" in your own head, under stress, in real time. What tends to actually work is less dramatic: encounter the idea, apply it to something real, come back to it the next day, apply it again.
